Trade Unions launch Better Work Better Lives Campaign

Trade union leaders and activists gathered in Belfast on 21st November to launch the Better Work Better Lives Campaign

Speaking at the campaign launch, ICTU Assistant General Secretary Owen Reidy said

'The Better Work Better Lives campaign has been developed by the trade union movement to tackle the scourge of low pay and insecure work across NI.  Our research indicates that 1 in every 3 workers in Northern Ireland believes their work to be insecure, while 20% of workers earn on or below the real living wage.

In addition, public expenditure, which funds our vital public services, has been cut in real terms by 10.2% since 2010 and hard working public sector workers haven't had a real pay rise for years'.

Chairperson of the Northern Ireland Committee Maria Morgan said

'We believe that we can make Northern Ireland a better place in which to live and work.  Today we are launching our position paper which, as well as analsying some of the problems which face us, also outlines positive policy options.  We would invite all sections of our society to work with us in the Better Work Better Lives campaign.'
