Campaign Update - March 2018

The trade unions supporting the Better Work Better Lives campaign fully back the industrial action of UCU members taking a stand to seek to negotiate a settlement to protect their pension scheme.
Universities UK have collapsed talks and have threatened to end the pensions scheme for thousands of UCU members across the UK, including QUB, UU and the Open University here in Northern Ireland.
We were delighted to participate in a UCU rally recently expressing our solidarity with the UCU members. The strike is regrettable but necessary when an employer walks away from the negotiating table. Shifting from a DB scheme to a DC scheme loads all the responsibility and risk on the workers and is inequitable and unnecessary in this instance.
Decent pension provision is a cornerstone of Decent Work, a basic right which should be enjoyed by all workers.

More constituency meetings have taken place in the recent week with activists coming together in Newry and South Armagh to prepare for meetings with their MLA,s

Activists from the campaign along with the Ballymena trades council had two positive engagements with Paul Frew DUP MLA and Jim Allister TUV MLA in North Antrim. Jim Allister has supported the campaign call for a forum for social dialogue and Paul Frew stated he supports the principle but would like to see more detail as to what a forum would look like. Other political meetings throughout the 18 constituencies are being organised to take place over the next number of months.
We are also preparing for our BDC in Derry which will bring together over 250 trade unionists from across ICTU affiliate members in April. The theme of the conference is Better Work Better Lives
