Campaign Update - June 2018

Over the last 6 weeks the Better Work Better Lives campaign continues to be active across Northern Ireland.

  • The NIC BDC was held in Derry city this year bring 200 leading trade union activists together to plan and develop strategies for the trade union movement in NI over the next 2 years. The theme of the conference was Better Work Better Lives and a number of unions had motions adopted on the theme of the campaign around low pay and insecure work, better public investment and moving beyond the 1% pay cap.

  • The campaign also organised a protest of conference activists at the EA offices in Derry to demand that no cuts take place to Special Education and that we ensure that families can continue to use the Special Education services in their communities. Gerry Murphy the new Chair of the NIC addressed the rally/protest.

  • This year’s Mayday rally had the theme Better Work Better Lives brought over 6,000 workers on to the streets in Belfast and heard from speakers such as Matt Wrack of the FBU and Patricia Mc Keown of Unison along with Kerry Fleck from Belfast TC. Matt Wrack addressed the issue of austerity and declining public investment head on in his contribution.

  • Owen Reidy, ICTU AGS addressed the INTO NI conference, the FSU conference and Welsh TUC conference and shared with delegates the objectives of the Better Work Better Lives campaign and highlighted the work that affiliated unions and activists are doing on the campaign across NI.

  • The political lobbying part of our campaign continues at a pace. Activists and NIC members have met a range of politicians in recent weeks explaining and promoting the campaign and in particular seeking support for a forum for Social Dialogue for Northern Ireland. Recent political meetings include, Steven Agnew MLA the Green Party, Paula Bradley, MLA the DUP, Conor Murphy and Orlaith Flynn MLA’s Sinn Fein and Stewart Dickson MLA from the Alliance Party, amongst others.

  • The leadership of the NIC also had a meeting with Jeremy Corbyn, MP and leader of the British Labour party at which the key elements of the Better Work Better Lives campaign were outlined, in particular the need for Northern Ireland to have a robust forum for Social Dialogue similar to other parts of the UK such as Wales.
