Campaign Update

The Better Work Better Lives campaign has been very active after the launch on 21st November 2017. In the last few weeks the campaign has,

·        Hosted activist meetings in 12 of the 18 Westminster political meetings preparing for the political lobby. This lobby will involve activists from across the 24 affiliate unions engaging in over 120 political meetings with MLAs, councils, and MPs throughout 2018 and early 2019.

·      The first political meeting took place in Upper Bann recently where constituency activists met Doug Beattie MLA of the UUP and he has supported the campaigns call for a forum for social dialogue in NI. To date 37 of the 90 MLA’s have offered to meet with us and these meetings will roll out over the next 4-8 weeks.

·         We have met with the CBI, NICVA, the UFU, the Equality Commission, Invest NI and the NIHF as part of our intention to meet with over 80 NGOs and representative bodies in seeking to build support for the campaign.

·         Had agreement from the NI and RoI ICTU Women’s committees that the theme of their all island conference in March 2018 will be Better Work Better Lives for Women Workers. This provides the campaign an opportunity to engage directly with senior women activists across the trade union movement and to have them become more involved and active in the campaign.

·         Met with a number of trades councils and the trade councils consultative committee to seek to ensure that the trade councils across NI play a role in this campaign.

Over the next few weeks we will be planning further activities with our private sector and public sector trade unions with events to be announced.
