The Better Work Better Lives campaign continues. Over the last number of weeks the campaign has addressed councillors from the following District Councils including Antrim and Newtonabbey, Mid East Antrim, Lisburn and Castlereagh, Causeway Coast and Glens and the Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Councils. We have outlined the approach, the issues and asks of the campaign and are seeking the support of the District Councils for our call for a forum for Social Dialogue for Northern Ireland.

The campaign has continued to engaged with a number of stakeholders and political parties on our new Childcare policy paper.

We recently met with SDLP Deputy Leader Nicola Mallon MLA

We also met with outgoing UUP leader Robin Swan MLA

We have also met with the Permanent Secretary of the Department of Finance on the issue of public sector pay. The abolition of the 1% pay cap and a return to the proper norms of collective bargaining for pay increases in excess of inflation is a key demand of the campaign. Unfortunately it is clear from our meeting that those who set public policy in Northern Ireland seem wedded to this counter productive approach to public sector pay of limiting it effectively to 1% per annum.

This is unacceptable and unsustainable. The campaign fully supports those unions that have been engaging in industrial action and strike action for fair pay for public servants including the teaching unions and NIPSA in the NICS. We will also fully support our health service unions that are also currently considering ballots for industrial action and strike action to seek fair and reasonable pay increases for their members.
